What Are The Common Signs Of Facial Ageing?

Understanding The Skin And Treating Facial Ageing

The skin changes with age and we start to see signs of ageing within the face. While this happens to everyone at some point, many people look to treat these concerns to look more youthful.

Common facial ageing signs include fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes, sagging skin, loss of skin elasticity, and hyperpigmentation.

In today’s blog, we look at what causes skin ageing and how you can improve facial ageing.

What causes facial ageing?

From our late 20s the early signs of facial ageing begin to show. This is due to skin losing elasticity and collagen production slowing down.

By the time we enter our 30s most of us have some signs of ageing showing in the face. For some people this may develop later in this decade of life, and some people do age better than others.

While collagen production slows down, it is a good idea to address the early signs of facial ageing. However for patients over the age of 50 a surgical route may be the better option.

Which treatments improve facial ageing signs?

Anti-ageing surgery can help to improve the appearance of various unwanted side-effects of the ageing process. You will need to book a consultation to ascertain your suitability.

For example, if the eyes half developed loose skin above or below the eye area, a blepharoplasty may be an option.

If you are unhappy with facial ageing with regards to sagging skin, a facelift or neck lift maybe suitable. There is more information on the treatment pages about both of these procedures designed to rejuvenate the face.

Are There Non Surgical Anti Ageing Treatments?

Non-invasive skin rejuvenation treatments are useful when treating minimal facial ageing signs. Injectable treatments such as dermal fillers can provide effective wrinkle reduction, for example.

You can find out more information about any of the non surgical anti-ageing treatments offered via the treatment pages.

Does Lower Body Lift Surgery Affect The Thighs & Buttocks?

Lower body lift surgery remains a focus in our next video, discussing whether the procedure also affects your thighs and buttocks when it’s completed. The surgery involves the removal of tissue around the whole body following dramatic weight loss on the lower body. This excess skin can advance to the thigh and buttocks too but whether these parts of the body are affected depends on where the scars are positioned after the lower body lift surgery. Patients do have alternative surgery options to address these areas such as a thigh lift or gluteal augmentation. A gluteal augmentation also involves the process of a fat transfer.

It must be highlighted that lower body lift surgery in an extensive procedure, therefore it isn’t recommended that the surgery is combined with another form of surgery such as a thigh lift or gluteal augmentation. There are case studies shown in the video to show how the lower body lift surgery affects the thighs and buttocks. Because the surgery takes place around the waist area, it tends to affect the upper thigh more than the mid-lower thigh region which is shown in the case studies provided. However, the case studies are an example of how visible excess skin can be improved through a lower body lift surgery.

Five health considerations if you’re considering cosmetic surgery

Preparing for cosmetic surgery in Manchester

For people thinking about undergoing cosmetic surgery there are many things that need considering before you book your procedure.

During a consultation your surgeon will discuss your health and mental wellbeing, as it’s important to make sure the patient is suitable for treatment, in all respects.

In this week’s blog, we look at the health considerations you need to take into account before undergoing cosmetic surgery procedures such as facelifts, mummy makeovers, and breast augmentation.

Health considerations can include both physical and mental wellbeing, but don’t forget to consider the financial implications of choosing to undergo cosmetic procedures.

  1. Are you of a normal BMI?

If you’re considering body contouring surgery, such as abdominoplasty (tummy tucks) or body lift surgery you will need to be of a stable BMI. This means your weight is considered steady and you are likely to recover well from surgery. If your BMI is over you may be advised to lose weight before undergoing the procedure.

  1. Do you suffer with health issues or allergies?

You must be sure to make your plastic surgeon aware of any health issues you have, such as allergies and conditions like asthma. Being honest with your surgeon is paramount to undergoing surgery safely. Other conditions to make a medical professional aware of include diabetes, any history of heart issues, and pregnancy.

  1. Do you smoke?

If you’re a smoker you will be requested to quit immediately. The complication risk in smokers is far higher than that of non smokers, a study recently discovered. Ideally you should stop smoking 6-8 weeks before your procedure. It’s best to cut back on alcohol too.

  1. Are you emotionally stable?

Your emotional wellbeing is very important. One of the aspects a surgeon will consider is your mental health and whether you’re suitable for cosmetic surgery. If you are deemed to be unsuitable (for example because of body dimorphia) or not choosing a procedure for the right reasons you may be declined the surgery.

  1. Can you cope with the recovery?

Recovering from cosmetic procedures can take time and in some cases may be uncomfortable. You need to be aware of the implications of the recovery process, and what the down time requires. You’ll need to take into account things like taking time off work, childcare, and such.

How A Mummy Tuck Can Get Your Pre-Baby Body Back

How To Rejuvenate Your Body After Pregnancy

Increasing numbers of women are seeking abdominoplasty procedures like the mummy tuck to get back into shape after pregnancy.

Pregnancy has a dramatic effect on the body, especially the abdomen. For many women the excess skin they’re left with can’t be helped by diet or exercise.

If skin doesn’t retract it can be left hanging and be a source of both emotional distress and physical discomfort. For women that wish to reduce this excess skin the mummy tuck may be the answer.

What Is The Mummy Tuck?

This is a form of abdominoplasty designed specifically to address post-pregnancy excess skin. Often completed as part of a mummy makeover (tummy tuck with breast rejuvenation and/or liposuction) it’s a long term solution and is classed as a surgical procedure.

What Does This Procedure Involve?

The mummy tuck can only be completed after a full consultation. Surgery takes place under anaesthetic and requires a hospital stay.

During surgery an incision is made in the abdomen and the skin that needs removing is cut away. Excess fat can also be removed.

The abdominal muscles below the skin can be tightened if necessary. This is often needed as the abdominal wall splits during pregnancy. Surgery can repair this.

The incision is then closed and you’ll return to ward to recover. You need to rest and allow the wound to heal safely. Your plastic surgeon in Manchester will give you all the recovery information you need.

How much does this surgery cost?

That depends entirely on who completes your mummy tuck abdominoplasty and where you have the procedure. Each case should be considered individually and a tailored procedure offered.

Do The Result Last A Long Time?

This is a surgical procedure so the results are long lasting. If you choose to undergo a mummy tuck but then have more children the results are unlikely to be retained.

See the information below to ascertain if you’re suitable for this type of abdominoplasty surgery.

Who Is A Mummy Tuck Suitable For?

This type of abdominoplasty is suitable for women who have had a child and dislike the way the skin has been left post pregnancy. The mummy tuck is best completed after you have finished having children.

Who Isn’t The Mummy Tuck Suitable For?

Woman who intend on having more children. Smokers are also advised to quit smoking if they wish to be considered for this abdominoplasty procedure.

More Information About This Abdominoplasty Procedure

If you would like more information about the mummy tuck please contact us via email or telephone. You can book a consultation to discuss your needs or goals in full with Mr Ross.

There is more information about mummy makeover procedures on the treatment pages too.

Three types of body contouring surgery

The most popular forms of body contouring surgery

When it comes to body contouring surgery, there are several variations of surgical treatment that are available to patients. Which is most suitable for you is determined during a consultation with a plastic surgeon that can offer you personalised advice.

Body contouring surgery itself is an umbrella term used to describe procedures that are designed to change the contours and shape of one or more areas of the body.

Facial contouring procedures also exist but these are different to the ones offered as part of body contouring surgery.

Whether the patient chooses to undergo one treatment to a specific area, or they wish to undergo multiple treatments to multiple areas, it is important to decide which procedure is most suitable.

The mummy makeover

The mummy makeover is an umbrella term that is used to describe a collection of procedures with the aim of improving the appearance of the abdomen and breasts. In most cases this includes a breast uplift of some kind, which may or may not involve silicone breast implants.

Alongside a breast rejuvenation procedure, a second body contouring procedure will also be used to improve the overall aesthetic of the body. For women who have had children this is most commonly the abdomen, in the form of tummy tuck surgery.

Lower body lifting

For some patients the lower body is the area they wish to focus on. This is usually regarding two areas: the buttocks and the thighs.

A thigh lift is specifically designed to recontour the upper legs. This involves skin being removed via an incision to the inner thigh.
A buttock lift is similar in nature although it is obviously designed to lift and reshape the buttocks rather than the size. However, it is not uncommon for both procedures to be performed in unison.

Upper body lifting

And upper body lift can include procedures such as brachioplasty which is designed to slim-line the upper arm area.

This is an ideal type of body contouring surgery for patients who wish to address concerns such as bingo wings, and is often sort have to head extreme weight loss or due to the natural ageing process.

An incision is nice along the dinner on and excess skin before the wound is closed.

Booking a consultation is key

Whichever form of body contouring surgery you choose to undergo, you will need to do your research and pick a body contouring surgery specialist who is able to offer you the best care.

Mr Ross is an experienced plastic surgeon who specialises in treatments designed to reduce skin laxity and lift the body.

What You Need to Know About Skin Reconstruction

How To Prepare For Skin Reconstruction After Mastectomy

The idea of undergoing skin reconstruction can seem daunting but as long as you are prepared for the surgery you should find that the process is manageable.

Skin reconstruction can take place in various ways. For some people it is as part of breast reconstruction surgery. For others it may be as a way of minimising scars caused by previous or because of conditions such as tumours.

This blog will briefly look at how you can prepare for skin reconstruction after a mastectomy.

What is the purpose of breast reconstruction surgery?

Breast reconstruction surgery is designed to create new breasts where the previous breasts have been removed. This may be one, or both breasts.

In order to create new breasts, skin reconstruction is necessary. Is to create a natural looking result that leaves the patient feeling confident.

It is worth pointing out at this point that not all women want or choose to undergo any kind of breast or skin reconstruction. It is a personal choice every woman is allowed to make herself.

How does skin reconstruction like this work?

Several procedures and different techniques that can be used depending on the personal circumstances of the patient. What works one patient may not necessarily work for another and it is important that each woman is treated as individual.

For the best cosmetic results, mastectomy patients who will undergo radiation and or chemotherapy are advised to delay reconstruction until their treatments have been completed.

Implants can be used below the skin in order to create the appearance of breast tissue, however, it is important to remember that because the natural tissues have been removed the breasts will not feel exactly the same as before.

Is there a more natural way to approach skin reconstruction?

Yes, patients can choose to not use implants. There are natural skin reconstruction methods available which can also offer aesthetically pleasing results.

During natural skin reconstruction, the surgeon transplants tissue from one area of the body and uses it create a natural looking breast. Surgeons can transfer a flap of skin and fat from the abdomen to create new breast tissue.

This is called the DIEP procedure. Tissue can also be taken from the buttocks and thighs too, depending on what’s agreed will work best for the patient. As it’s the patient’s own tissue it will grow or decrease in size as you gain or lose weight.

Patients often find the new breasts look more genuine and feel more like natural breasts than those reconstructed with implants.

Is there any issues surrounding breast and skin reconstruction like this?

A common problem with implants is capsular contracture. This is when scar tissue (capsule) forms around the silicone implant and it starts to tighten. This makes the breast feel hard and sometimes painful or distorted.

Another problem that sometimes arises is irregular healing. In some cases infection can occur around the wound area which effects the way skin reconstruction heals.

Before undergoing any kind of cosmetic surgery it is important to ascertain all of the facts. Make sure that you are completely aware of all of the risks and complications, as well as benefits that this type of procedure offers.

It was a great honour to share my personal experience in relation to the mummy makeover procedure, fleur de lis abdominoplasty and body lifting with my colleagues and to be given the opportunity to meet and discuss experiences with an international panel of experts. A wide variety of body contouring procedures were discussed and it was refreshing to here so may different opinions and results.

There is an increasing need to offer a wide variety of options to patients, often involving multiple surgical sites. It is clear that the variety of combinations that can be performed simultaneously is expanding.

Ultimately, the feasibility of combining body and breast rejuvenation surgery rests on the requirement that the entire operation must be as safe as each of its component procedures if performed individually.

In facial surgery key opinion leaders debated the pros and cons of a wide variety of surgical options for facial surgery. There were live non-surgical demonstrations and a robust discussion on the treatment of the anterior neck when combined with face lifting. The pros and cons of many rejuvenative techniques such as brow lifting, fat transfer and facial implants in order to improve facial aesthetics were debated. The blending of non-surgical and surgical techniques was reflected by the wide variety of clinical experts.

It was a privilege to be part of the international faculty, to learn and exchange ideas in order to continue to improve the quality of care for patients.

4 Advantages Of A Chemical Peels Vs. Surgery

Can Chemical Peels Offer Better Results Than Surgery

Chemical peels have a variety of uses aesthetically. While they cannot replace cosmetic surgery procedures, there do have a place.

A commonly offered skin rejuvenation treatment, chemical peels are non surgical and minimally invasive compared to surgical alternatives.

What Is A Chemical Peel?

Whilst classed as non-surgical, there are different strengths of chemical peels available. It’s important patients choose a practitioner that is highly skilled in using peels. They can offer you a tailored approach to your treatment.

Chemical peels have seen a spike in popularity in recent years, with many celebrities including Sharon Osbourne opting for this non-surgical form of facial rejuvenation. They are a way of keeping the skin looking and feeling fresh and energised.

Here are four popular reasons to consider skin peels over or alongside cosmetic surgery.

1. Chemical Peels Are Versatile

Chemical peels were thought to simply be used to exfoliate a layer of damage skin away, in turn revealing a more youthful layer. However they also improve the matrix of the skin from deep within. Chemical peel treatment rebuilds and remodels collagen enabling the skin to appear firmer and rejuvenated.

2. Peels Come In Different Strengths

There are three strengths of chemical skin peel: superficial, medium, and deep. There are numerous benefits to undergoing chemical skin peel treatment. Whether you are male or female client looking for a non-surgical way to improve the appearance of the skin, it’s likely that chemical peels come provide a great alternate more invasive methods.

3. Many Skin Rejuvenation Benefits

Benefits of undergoing chemical skin peel treatment include reducing sun and age damage, and controlling skin conditions such as acne, rosacea, thread veins, pigmentation. They can be used to improve the skin on the chest, décolletage and even the hands too.

4. Long lasting results

As well as less downtime compared to cosmetic surgery and anti ageing procedures, chemical peels results can last for a long while. Although, it is usually the case that a patient will return to the clinic in the future to undergo further treatments. This is normal as part of a long-term skin health regime.

More Information

We offer several other forms of non-surgical anti-ageing treatments to improve facial volume, particularly in the mid face. These can be used as stand alone treatments of part of a cosmetic surgery plan.

As well as surgical alternatives such as the traditional facelift, skin rejuvenation treatments such as fat transfer or volumisers can improve the skin of the face without invasive procedures which require longer recovery time.
