July 2014 Mentor Cadaveric Workshop

Mr Ross delivered a series of lectures on breast augmentation to consultant colleague at the new cadaver lab facility at the University of Manchester. Mr Ross believes in sharing his experience with colleagues so that patients can be delivered the most optimal results. Johnson and Johnson sponsored the event which was a huge success. It is anticipated that there will be an advanced course that will be developed for ongoing educational support for consultants. This basic course has been a great success over the years and Mr Ross hopes to develop this further at the University of Manchester. The Programme is attached.

March 2014 Pannone Conference

One of the most important aspects of aesthetic practice is the adherence to treatment pathways, appropriate information giving and consent. Mr Ross was an invited speaker on this important course hosted by Pannone, one of the largest legal firms concerned with medical negligence. Increasingly patients require information at all stages of the treatment process which although time consuming is invaluable for both patients and doctors alike. The taking of consent needs to be tailored not just to the procedure but to the patient and how treatments can affect that individual.

This information giving and consent and subsequent treatments need to be given by the clinician carrying out the treatment. All clinicians should be part of an appraisal and revalidation process, work within their procedural competence and within suitably recognised CQC establishments. Patient safety is imperative and although complications can occur, by adhering to strict guidance such as the GMC, clinicians can protect themselves against clinical negligence.

Feb 2014 Bodyjet Liposuction Training

Mr Ross attended a bodyjet liposuction conference in Hamburg. As one of the few consultants performing bodyjet liposuction in the UK Mr Ross was able to watch live surgery with two of the leaders in the field and establish the developing role of autologous fat transfer in plastic, reconstructive and cosmetic surgery. Although Mr Ross has been using bodyjet liposuction and breast augmentation with autologous fat for almost 10 years the improved harvesting techniques offered by bodyjet have enabled Mr Ross over the last 5 years to refine the harvesting and delivery of fat. The goals of autologous fat transfer are to improve the quality of fat harvest and delivery. For patients safety is most important and also long term results. Improving all aspects of the autologous fat transfer technique by bodyjet aims to improve outcomes and results. Mr Ross sees an increasing role for autologous fat transfer in revisionary breast augmentation and reconstruction and with improved survival bodyjet may well alter the management of breast augmentation in the future.

Dec 2013 Baxter Training Course

Mr Ross was invited as part of the faculty to talk about his experience in the use of Artiss in the enhanced recovery of patients. He has used it in facial, breast and contouring surgery and has found that it helps with his patients. He no longer uses drains for any cosmetic procedure and the majority of oncological excisions and reconstructions he has used it also without requiring drains. Mr Ross also demonstrated techniques of dissection to minimize seroma formation and enhance the use of Artiss in the cadaver setting.

Dec 2013 BAPRAS Meeting

Mr Ross was senior author of three papers and chaired the Breast Speciality Group meeting. We are always trying to improve recovery times for patients and we have been able to show that the enhanced surgical recovery pathway has helped to reduce recovery. For melanoma, sentinel node biopsy has increased the ability to detect small volume disease. It remains a valuable tool and we are able to more clearly define the implications of individual cell detection within pathological specimens to better define outcomes. For large head and neck cancers often there is a need to sacrifice the facial nerve. We have used a new technique using tissue from the arm and combination with a vascularised tendon to help improve function in patients postoperatively.

During the breast speciality group meeting there was discussion about the ongoing need for improved oncoplastic training and education. There was much discussion about the need for increased oncological teaching for plastic surgeons in oncology and integration with breast surgeons in mdt’s in order to improve outcomes for patients.
